START VENUE: Queen Street Railway Station, North Hanover Street, Glasgow G1 2AF (Map 64 GR NS592655). The walk can also be started at the Central Railway Station marked (*) in the route description.
CAR PARKING: There are various car parks around the city.
FACILITIES: Café’ & toilets (cost 30p) are available at the start venue and at various points along the route.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Train to the start point or bus services to Buchanan Bus Station which is approx. 300m from the start point.
TERRAIN: Roads and tarmac footpaths through the city with a couple of steep hills. Suitable for pushchairs but not for wheelchairs.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION (Updated 22nd October 2011)

PLEASE REMEMBER TO TAKE GREAT CARE WHEN CROSSING ROADS

Leave the station using the exit to ‘George Square’. Go down steps & at junction with road, turn left. Cross North Hanover Street & continue with George Square on right. At end of square turn left into North Frederick Street. Follow road uphill to reach traffic lights at junction with Cathedral Street. Turn right & follow road passing ‘City of Glasgow College’ on your left. At next traffic lights, continue ahead towards cathedral. At t-junction with Castle Street go ahead to cross road (by bearing left to traffic island, then turning right to use pedestrian crossing). Turn right to pass statue of David Livingstone on your left & immediately turn left in front of next building. (1 km)

Q.1 There is a stone in the curved part of the wall that was laid in 1988 – who laid the stone?

Continue along this walkway to reach the front of the cathedral. (The cathedral is worth a visit. On the hill behind the cathedral you will see the necropolis which is also worth a visit). Turn right & follow path to reach road. Turn right & at road junction, turn left into Castle Street passing Police Box on left. Follow road downhill & at traffic lights continue straight ahead passing High Street Station on left. At next road junction, continue ahead towards clock tower (Tolbooth Steeple). Cross Bell Street & continue to reach clock tower. Turn left into Gallowgate. Go under railway bridge & continue ahead on road for approx. 275m (passing Saracens Head PH on left) to reach ‘The Barras’ on your right. Turn right to pass under the archway into Kent Street (The market is open at weekends & is now said to be one of the biggest markets in Europe). Take the next turning left into Moncur Street & at end of road go under archway & turn right. Follow road & at junction with traffic lights go straight ahead. At t-junction, go ahead entering ‘Glasgow Green’ & walk down slope to road. Turn left & follow road to reach fountain. Turn right & go down a step.  (3 km)

Q.2 What is the name of the fountain?

Continue down steps to the front of the’Peoples Palace’. Turn left & immediately turn right on tarmac roadway with ‘Peoples Palace’ on your right (there is a café & toilets inside). The roadway bears right & at back of ‘Peoples Palace’ turn left through gate to reach round path junction. Bear right (in 2 o’clock direction) towards ‘Nelson’s Monument. Pass monument & continue in same direction along tree lined path towards archway. Go under archway to reach road. Turn right & at road junction go ahead into Saltmarket. Follow road to reach railway bridge. Turn left to cross road using pedestrian crossing & turn right to continue along the same road towards clock tower (Tolbooth Steeple). At traffic lights turn left into Trongate. At next traffic lights turn right into Albion Street. Take next turning left into Bell Street. At end of road turn right into Candleriggs. Pass City Halls on right to reach junction by ‘Ramshorn Theatre’. Turn left & follow Ingram Street to reach road junction by ‘Gallery of Modern Art’. Bear left, then right to cross road using pedestrian crossing & go ahead with ‘Gallery of Modern Art’ on your right. Continue ahead under archway to reach junction with Buchanan Street. Turn left & follow road to reach traffic lights. Turn right into Argyle Street & follow towards ‘Central Station’. Cross Union Street & follow road under ‘Central Station’ bridge (*).   (5½ km)

Take next turning right into Hope Street . Follow road passing station on right to reach junction with St Vincent Street. Turn left into St Vincent Street & follow road uphill towards church spire in the distance. Continue to follow St Vincent Street downhill passing church on right to reach traffic lights by ‘Dalmore House’ on right. Turn right (using pedestrian crossing to cross road) & go ahead with ‘Dalmore House’ on your right. Follow road passing BP garage on left to reach junction with Bath Street by The Griffin PH. Turn left into Bath Street . Pass ‘Kings Theatre’ on left to reach traffic lights. Continue ahead crossing the M8 motorway into Berkeley Street . After approx. 250m & at traffic lights turn right into Elderslie Street . At next traffic lights continue ahead to reach ‘Acorn Hotel’ on right. Turn left into Clairmont gardens & follow road with gardens on right & at next road junction (Clifton Street) cross road & bear right through gate to enter ‘Kelvingrove Park’. Go straight ahead on middle path towards ‘Stewart Memorial Fountain’. Follow path to reach fountain. Go round fountain & continue in the same direction. After passing between children’s play area on left & pond on right, turn right on footpath. Follow footpath with river on left to reach bridge on left & memorial on right.(8 km)

Q.3 Who erected the memorial?

Bear left onto ‘Kelvin Walkway’. Follow walkway with river on left ignoring all turnings to reach exit onto road. Turn right on road passing church on left. At roundabout, go ahead bearing right to pass ‘Burnbank Bowling Club’ on right. Continue on road with grassy bank on right to reach junction with West End Park Street (on left) by ‘The Halt Bar’. Turn right in front of church & follow road uphill for approx. 50m to reach t-junction. Turn left into Lynedoch Pl. heading towards tower. At next junction turn left into Lynedoch Street (signposted ‘City Centre’). After approx. 80m turn right into Lynedoch Terr. At end turn left into Woodside Terrace. Follow road keeping on left hand pavement, bearing right & downhill. Approx. 30m after passing  no entry signs & after ‘Woodside Crescent Dental Practice’, turn left to take footbridge over the M8 motorway. At end of footbridge turn sharp right through metal bollaRoads. Path goes downhill & after approx. 30m turn right, bearing right to pass under footbridge then bearing left. Go ahead on pavement with wall on right. Follow road uphill & round right hand bend. Go ahead into Buccleuch Street passing the Scottish National Trust’s ‘Tenement House’ on your right. (10½ km)

At next junction turn right into Garnet Street & at top of hill, turn left into Hill Street . As road starts to go downhill, pass ‘ Aloysius’ College’ on right & turn right into Dalhousie Street. Cross Renfrew Street & continue ahead downhill passing ‘The Glasgow School of Art’. At next road junction, turn left into Sauchiehall Street . At next junction go straight ahead into pedestrian zone. Continue ahead through pedestrian precinct crossing Hope Street, Renfield Street & West Nile Street to reach Buchanan Galleries. Turn right passing statue of Donald Dewar to reach road. Cross road & go ahead. Approx. 15m after passing Buchanan Street Underground entrance turn left into Dundas Lane to return to Queen Street Station. (12 km)
